From Research to Real-World Impact: IUC-QNU Advances Sustainable Agriculture and Renewable Energy

Connecting scientific research with local communities in Central Vietnam

On 28 June 2026, Professor Peter Lievens from KU Leuven, together with faculty members, researchers and students from Quy Nhon University (QNU), visited two research and application sites in Gia Lai Province under the IUC-QNU project. The visit highlighted how university research and international collaboration can contribute to sustainable agriculture, renewable energy and community development.

At Nam Yang Agricultural Cooperative, the delegation explored a solar-powered greenhouse drying system developed by the QNU research. The visit also provided insights into the cooperative’s coffee processing technologies, including color and size sorting, steam treatment and roasting. The exchange offered an opportunity to discuss the role of appropriate technologies in improving post-harvest processing and adding value to local agricultural products.

The delegation then visited the biogas experimental facility, where the research team demonstrated practical approaches to converting agricultural and livestock waste into renewable energy. The applications presented included biogas purification and its potential use for cooking, heating and electricity generation. These solutions illustrate how locally available resources can be transformed into useful energy while supporting waste management and more sustainable farming practices.

Beyond the technical demonstrations, the visit fostered dialogue between researchers, international partners, students and local stakeholders. It also provided students with valuable opportunities to connect scientific knowledge with real-world challenges.

These activities reflect the core mission of IUC-QNU: translating research and innovation into practical solutions that serve local communities and promote sustainable development. Through its partnership with KU Leuven, Quy Nhon University continues to strengthen its research capacity, expand international academic cooperation and support the application of science and technology to regional development.
