The working visit of sub-project 1 Flemish team leader at Quy Nhon City

Within the framework of the Phase 1 Partnership Project for University Institutional Cooperation with Quy Nhon University (the IUC-QNU Phase 1), from May 30, 2023, to June 3, 2023, Prof. Patrick Willems from the Hydraulics and Geotechnics Section at the Department of Civil Engineering, KU Leuven, Belgium, had a working visit at Quy Nhon University and relevant local authorities. The main purpose of this trip was to participate in the Official Launch (29/5/2023) and the First Joint Steering Committee Meeting (31/5/2023) of the IUC-QNU Phase 1. Taking advantage of the visit, he also worked and supported sub-project 1 in all activities related to the sub-project research topic – Developing an early flood warning system to improve the adaptive capability of the local authorities and communities in the context of climate change” for the Kon River basin (Binh Dinh province) and Ky Lo River basin (Phu Yen province).

On the afternoon of May 29th, 2023, Prof. Patrick Willems, along with other sub-project team leaders, attended the Official Launch of the IUC-QNU Phase 1 at  Hall B of Quy Nhon University. The event not only served as a milestone marking the first steps in connecting QNU with the international academic community, but also opened up opportunities to foster multilateral relationships and cooperation, towards the sustainable development of QNU and localities..

On the morning of May 30, 2023, Prof. Patrick Willems met and exchanged ideas with sub-project 1 team members and participated in a joint academic seminar. During the visit, Prof. Patrick Willems had a friendly meeting with Assoc. Prof. Doan Duc Tung – Vice Rector of QNU. Then, together with team members of sub-project 1, they had a tour at the practical and experimental area of two divisions Electronics and Telecommunications (Department of Engineering and Technology)  and Geography – Management of Natural Resources and Environment (Department of Natural Sciences). Prof. Willems was introduced to sensor devices and devices for IoT-based automated monitoring in image and sound processing support. Additionally, he was presented with specialized equipment for measurements, dedicated geospatial software, and the existing map database system of the Kon River basin.

In the afternoon, Prof. Patrick Willems, along with the members of sub-project 1, paid a visit to Binh Dinh Department of Irrigation where he had an excellent opportunity to discuss with the staff members there . The discussion focused on the current applications of information technology in disaster prevention and response in Binh Dinh province. Subsequently, the team went for a field trip at Van Phong and Phu Phong dams (on the Kon River) to understand the water regulation mechanisms within the dam systems, as well as the existing IoT devices installed in these areas.

The business trip was a great success. Through this visit, Prof. Patrick Willems gained a broader overview of the advantages and challenges that sub-project 1 is facing in its early years. As a result, he was able to determine the right directions for sub-project 1, contributing to the successful implementation of sub-project 1 within the framework of IUC-QNU Phase 1.
