Dak Lak and Gia Lai provinces have been designated as key research areas of Subproject 3 under the Institutional University Cooperation (IUC) Program of Quy Nhon University, funded by VLIR-UOS (Belgium), and referred to as IUC-QNU.

To ensure effective coordination in carrying out research activities in Dak Lak province, the leadership of Quy Nhon University held a working session with the Dak Lak Provincial People’s Committee on March 13th, 2024. During the meeting, both sides reached a consensus on collaboration for implementing the research activity plan within the province. This agreement was formally recorded in Notice No. 58/TB-VPUBND, issued by the Office of the Dak Lak Provincial People’s Committee on March 29th, 2024.

To strengthen collaboration with local partners, the delegation included Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tien Trung – Standing vice Head of IUC-QNU Local Steering Committee, Dr. Bui Hong Hai – Leader of Subproject 3, along with members MSc. Ho Tan, MSc. Phan Hoai Vy and PhD. candidate To Thi Bich Ngoc conducted a working trip to Dak Lak province from May 11th to May 14th, 2025.

The delegation held a meeting with the Western Highlands Agriculture and Forestry Science Institute (WASI) on May 12th, 2025. The meeting was attended by WASI representatives, including Dr. Phan Thanh Binh – Head of Division of Research Management and International Cooperation; Dr. Hoang Manh Cuong – Head of Division of Forestry and Fruit Crops, MSc. Dang Dinh Duc Phong – Vice Head of the same Division, and other WASI staff members. The working session regarded ongoing research activities, such as the collection of local durian varieties in Gia Lai and Dak Lak provinces and grafting with two commercial durian cultivars (Ri 6 and Monthong). The WASI representatives and Quy Nhon University delegation also discussed the upcoming activity plan and potential collaboration to implement research activities under subproject 3. Both sides agreed to continue the close, long-term collaboration to achieve the objectives of the subproject.

To further enhance and expand cooperation, the delegation also visited the Institute of Biotechnology and Environment (IBE), Tay Nguyen University. They were welcomed by Dr. Tran Minh Dinh – Head of the Department of Training and Scientific Research, and Dr. Tran Thi Minh Ngoc – researcher. The meeting focused on the collaborative implementation of specific research packages on durian trees directly conducted by PhD candidate To Thi Bich Ngoc. The key activities include photographing pollen under a fluorescence microscope, culturing pollen to assess viability and germination potential. IBE expressed strong interest in collaborating with Subproject 3, particularly in its areas of expertise, such as disease control and analysis of durian fruit quality.

The working trip successfully achieved the proposed objectives. The outcomes will help strengthen partnerships with local institutions and support the effective implementation of subproject 3 research activities shortly.
