Business trip to Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gia Lai and Dak Lak Province

The IUC program at Quy Nhon University, sponsored by VLIR-UOS (Belgium) for 10 years, will officially launch in September 2022. Project 3 in the IUC Program on pre-harvest management of avocado and durian trees is expected to be implemented in the two provinces of Gia Lai and Dak Lak. In order to preliminarily assess the current status of cultivation and to survey opinions and suggestions related to durian and avocado cultivation of farmers in the provinces within the framework of Phase In, project 3 team led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tien Trung had a field trip and worked in the Central Highlands from April 12 to April 16, 2022.

During meetings with the Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development in Gia Lai and Dak Lak provinces, the research components proposed in the project were discussed. At the same time, the parties (P3 team and key stakeholders) discussed the conditions for implementation, forms of cooperation and transfer of research results, as well as proposed options and costs for renting avocado and durian orchards when the project is being implemented in the two provinces.

During the trip, the delegation also visited avocado and durian orchards of farmers in Chu Se and Chu Pah districts (Gia Lai province) with the support of staff from district agricultural service centers. In Dak Lak, QNU team worked with farmers in Cu Kuin and Krong Nang districts and extension workers of District Agricultural Stations. Some discussions with farmers and extension workers such as pest and disease situation and treatments, nutrient managements in different farming models, flowering and fruiting protocols on avocado and durian, visiting some avocado germplasm orchards…took place at orchards. In addition, the QNU group also participated in interviewing farmers in order to select typical farmers who will participate in the models when conducting research and applied studies in the period of Phase 1 (2022-2027) of the IUC program.
