A short-term visit to Ghent University (Belgium), from May 12th to May 23rd, 2023, to accumulate information, knowledge and experience in the field of sustainable cultivation

Implementing the working plan for the 1st year of sub-projects 3 and 5 (IUC-QNU Phase 1), the QNU delegation including Dr. Bui Hong Hai and Dr. Cao Tan Binh had a short – term visit from 12th to 23rd May, 2023 at  Ghent University (UGent) located in Ghent, Kingdom of Belgium. The purpose of this trip was not only to visit some farms and agricultural production facilities in Ghent to exchange and learn about sustainable farming models, but also to visit some relavant laboratories at UGent to discuss about future collaboration.
The QNU delegation was warmly welcomed, supported and provided with favorable conditions by the professors at UGent to visit various farms and agricultural production facilities, including:
(i) Gemaflor – a family-owned business specializing in vineyard cultivation and champagne production (Wijndomein Vandersteene) – which was voted as the best wine in Belgium in 2021. (Website: www.gemaflor.eu)
(ii) Appelpers Lerouge Zevergem – a farm specializing in apple cultivation, apple juice production, and apple-related products as well as providing related agricultural services and showcasing sustainable organic farming practices. The farm left a strong impression on the delegation. (Website: www.appelperslerouge.be)

At Coupure Campus  (UGent), Dr. Bui Hong Hai visited the laboratories of Prof. Danny Geelen (www.horticell.ugent.be) and Prof. Monica Höfte. During the visit, they discussed about the research directions  of sub-project 3 and  some proposed activities for the upcoming years, such as training PhD students or  planning short-term internships of QNU staff at UGent’s laboratories. Taking advantage of the participation in the Symposium of Crop Protection annually organized by UGent for 75 years, Dr. Bui Hong Hai had a brief dicussion with Prof. Monica Höfte’s colleagues about relavant research topics as well as cooperation opportunities.

A beautiful and ancient Ghent 

The visit was a great success. It is expected that all the information, knowledge, and experience which were accumulated by the QNU delegation will be very useful for carrying out the research and collaboration activities, contributing to the successful implementation of sub-project 3  within the framework of IUC-QNU Phase 1.
